Myrtle Mae and the Mirror in the Attic Review by Author Elizabeth Delana Rosa
Myrtle Mae and the Mirror in the Attic is a fun, action-packed ride from the first page to the last. Eight-year-old Myrtle Mae and her family have moved into her deceased Great Aunt Gertrude’s home. During an exploratory “mission”, Myrtle and her brothers find a mirror in the attic. That night Myrtle and her family are awakened by a strange cat, dubbed Mr. Screeches, who befriends her. The real fun begins when Goblins come through the mirror in the attic and kidnap her family. Now it’s up to Myrtle and Mr. Screeches to save them. To add to her worries, Myrtle begins to find her place in an ancient prophesy in the line of powerful Mae Witches and a that Mr.Screeches can talk.
I give this book a solid 4 Flowers. I don’t usually review books for younger readers but this was a good departure for me. I like the characters. I especially enjoyed Mr. Screeches who was in true cat fashion a bit snarky and sarcastic. I have to mention that it was extremely well written, but the age groups are mentioned seem to be a bit too young. Myrtle is entirely too self-aware for very young children. I would recommend this book for tweens and young teens.
