USA Today bestselling author Cynthia Sax writes SciFi, contemporary and paranormal erotic romances. Her stories have been featured in Star Magazine, Real Time With Bill Maher, and numerous best of romance top ten lists.

Get to Know Cynthia Sax:

When did you first realize you wanted to be an Author?

Cynthia Sax: I’ve always written. Since the moment I could hold a crayon, I’ve been crafting stories. It wasn’t until I sent a story to a romance writing contest and placed second that I realized I might be able build a career around writing. That wild thought changed my life.

journal-2850091_960_720What would you say is your interesting quirk that only happens when you are writing?

Cynthia Sax: I tend to move with my main character in the action scenes (which is why I don’t write at coffee shops – grins). It looks strange but it helps me with description.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in writing your books?

Cynthia Sax:  I’ve learned that I can’t write a story that isn’t in a series. (grins) Whenever I ‘meet’ a character, even a character who appears only on a handful of pages, I want to know his or her entire back story AND give him or her a happy ending.

Where do you get ideas for your books?

Cynthia Sax:  I get my ideas from anywhere and everywhere. Today, for example, I read an article about how a self-driving car ran over a robot. Why would the car do that? Did one AI have a grudge with another AI? What if factions of AI fought other factions of AI and humans were stuck in the middle of that war? That’s a great premise for a story!

Out of all the books you have written which is your favorite and why?

warlord sky_ebookx2_500x750Cynthia Sax:  That is like asking a Mom who her favorite child is. LOL My favorite story is always the most recent one. It is new and shiny.
Warlord Sky, my January release, is the first standalone story in an exciting new series. The hero is a Chamele Barbarian Warrior, a being with long hair, sharp claws and an exciting savage streak. The heroine is the Chamele’s Head of Ship and Weapons Design. She has a deadly secret and has created an adorable bot army to put distance between herself and others.
These two characters are magical together.

Who do you think will love your book the most?

Cynthia Sax:  Romance readers who love exotic settings, primitive heroes and feisty intelligent heroines will likely enjoy Warlord Sky. The story is gritty, dark, violent and sexy so it isn’t for every reader.

What do you think makes a good story?

Cynthia Sax:  If a writer creates interesting characters, I will likely enjoy her or his story. Give me someone I can care about, someone who isn’t perfect, who might have some demons, someone who has tasks he or she wants to complete, and I’m yours.
(grins) Yes, I’m THAT easy to please.

Who are some of your favorite Authors?

Cynthia Sax: In the SciFi Romance subgenre, I love Laurann Dohner, Ruby Dixon, Veronica Scott, Cara Bristol, Eve Langlais and so many other talented writers.  Laurann Dohner and Eve Langlais are the reason I started writing cyborg romances. I LOVE both of those cyborg series. Cara Bristol’s Breeder series got me hyped about alien romances. Ruby Dixon is THE SciFi Romance writer for barbarian romances.

If you could pick one actor to play a character in your book in the movie version, who would it be?

Cynthia Sax: Vin Diesel would make a great Chamele Barbarian Warrior. I loved him in Chronicles of Riddick (it’s an animal thing – yum). He’s fierce, has a low sexy voice and would look great with claws.

Who are some of the people that influenced your love of writing?

Cynthia Sax:  My Awesome Mom is a reader and encouraged all of us (her six kids) to read. I also give a lot of credit to libraries and librarians for who I am today. My family was dirt poor (we didn’t eat every day and grew up in rural Canada, without running water) but man, when I left a library with my arms filled with books, I felt like a billionaire.

Is this book considered a dark Sci-fi book such as aliens or other decimate the earth or something lighter like ET?

Sci-fi to this interviewer doesn’t necessarily mean aliens, but it is a good example of the genre’s extreme polarities.

Cynthia Sax: My currently published SciFi Romances are all darker. There’s violence. Bad things happen. No one, except for the couple (or more) and the couples of previous stories, are safe. There’s also a happy romantic ending, of course. The stories ARE romances. But the tone is definitely dark.

monitor-155158_640What kind of TV shows do you like and do you find that as a Sci-Fi Writer that you gravitate toward Sci-Fi Movies and Television?

Cynthia Sax: The TV Shows I currently love are Westworld (rebelling androids!), Game Of Thrones (no one is safe!) and Lucifer (his sense of humor enthralls me).
As a SciFi Romance Writer, I try to watch as many of the popular SciFi Movies and TV Shows as I can. I enjoy them (that’s one of the reasons I write these stories), but I also think it is important to watch what my reading buddies are likely watching. TV and movies influence readers’ expectations for my stories. Knowing the hot trends keeps me relevant as a writer.

Sci-Fi is often grouped with the Fantasy and Paranormal genres; do you find a close connection between them?

Cynthia Sax: Yes, there IS a close connection between SciFi Romance, Fantasy Romance and Paranormal Romance. They all involve an escape from today’s world. We enter other vividly crafted worlds, leave our troubles and our problems behind us.

If you had one piece of advice for an aspiring Author what would it be?

Cynthia Sax:  Write the story that makes YOU happy. That joy is the only thing we writers can truly control. Protect it at all costs.
After that first draft is written, THEN you can figure out how to make it marketable. Maybe that involves tweaking the story to benefit from a current trend. Maybe it merely means crafting promotional material around a certain aspect of the story.
Write the first draft for YOU.

What would you like to say to friends and family of Authors (not just your own)?

Cynthia Sax:  Writing is a perspective career, not merely a hobby. Treat your loved one’s writing as you would treat a loved one’s enrollment in dentistry school, for example. Respect the time and the effort and support her or him. The writer will love you for this.

What projects do you have up and coming?

choosing chuckles_ebookx2_500x750Cynthia Sax: Choosing Chuckles, the next story in the cyborg series, will be releasing in March. Chuckles is adorably grumpy yet has one of the biggest hearts of all the cyborg heroes I’ve written. H
is heroine has blue-and-pink hair, loves sparkle and drives him right up the wall. They are wonderful together.
Warlord’s Bounty, the second story in the Chamele Barbarian Warlords series, will also be releasing in May. That will be Khan’s story. He’s the fiercest of the Warlords and his heroine is his equal.

Is there anything else you want to share with your readers?

Cynthia Sax: If you’d like to sample my work, both Releasing Rage and Dark Thoughts, the first stories in the Cyborg and the Refuge series, are currently FREE at all booksellers.

Releasing Rage

releasing rage_500x750Half Man. Half Machine. All Hers.

Dark Thoughts

Can love redeem a monster?

The Refuge is home to some of the most violent beings in the universe. Kralj, its leader, reigns over the remote outpost with terrifying ease, ruthlessly squashing any rumors of rebellion, killing anyone who breaks his rules. Primitive, deadly, powerful, he’s a monster, scarred both on his face and his soul. He has never met a being he couldn’t control.

Until he meets her.

Dita has one mission—to kill the three targets claiming sanctuary within the Refuge. Or so she claims. For the first time in his long lifespan, Kralj isn’t certain of another being’s intentions. The tiny assassin is immune to his powers, her thoughts unreadable. He can’t predict her movements, can’t control her, can’t stop wanting her.

Dita is rare, as unique as he is, and, to keep the residents of the Refuge safe, Kralj will have to kill her. But first, he’ll touch her, taste her, show her how passionate the beast inside him can be.

Dark Thoughts is a STAND-ALONE SciFi Romance.
The hero might be tall, dark, and scarred but don’t be fooled by his appearance.
He’s truly a monster.
This story is not for readers with delicate sensibilities.

barbarian-3009134_960_720She lifted her chin, met his gaze. Stars. He was handsome, his face stark, his golden skin decorated with silver scars. His long black hair was streaked with gray, attesting to his number of solar cycles, to his experience. His eyes were dark, drawing her in.
He was perfect, the epitome of a Chamele warrior.
She was a freak.
A freak who wanted him, who desired him more than she had desired any other being. She had to get away from him. Her lips parted, another lie forming.
He captured her mouth, his flesh firm against hers, the pressure breaking her. Weak, so very weak, she opened to him.
